NAB 2010 - Day2

NAB 2010 - Day2

2010-04-13

Welcome to Las Vegas... NAB 2010 - Day2

So I've still only made it part way through one hall after 2 days of wearing out my feet and fighting through crowds.

Here are some interesting finds:

Adobe CS5

Adobe has launched CS5,

Photoshop CS5 has some new detailed edge detection algorithms.
Aftereffects CS5 is now 64bit native making faster than ever as well as higher colour bit depth support.
Illustrator CS5 has added Perspective Drawing, making it easy to create realistic perspective drawings.
Premiere CS5 also goes 64 bit and has added many new native file formats such as XDCAM HD 50, AVCCAM, DPX, AVC Intra, H264 and enhanced RED Support.

Apace

Apace are continuing their great product range with support for mobile devices in their web interface. Here Lee Hu is demonstrating Apple's new iPad running a review and approval session with a vstor POSTMAM system.
vStor and eStor configurations have grown in speed and storage now available in up to 48GB nodes.

ATTO

Atto Technology keep our bandwidth appetites fed. Here we have a new quad channel 8Gbps Fibrechannel Card. This type of technology makes multistream uncompressed 4K systems a reality.

Blackmagic

One of my favourite products of the show so far is the new Blackmagic Ultrastudio Pro. This device utilises the unheard of speeds of USB3 (4.8 Gb/s) to deliver uncompressed 10 bit HD video capture and playback. All in a very sexy unibody Alloy (Apple Looking) body.

Digital Fusion

While everyone is worrying about who's buying out who and what price they are going to have to compete with Steve at Eyeon Software is just getting on with the job of delivering consisatntly great compositing software. Eyeon unveiled Fusion 6.1 featuring the next generation of the GPU Supercomputing, Relighting and RenderMan® support.

Marquise Technoloies & Sondor

http://www.h-digital.com.au/images/news/nab2010/DAY2/Marquise.jpg

Dan and Laurence from Marquise here with Pete and Dave. Marquise has joined forces with Sondor and the Altra Telecine to create the best mix of old style linear Telecine Colour Grading and modern DI file based Colour grading workflow.

Marquise's Ocean software can control the Altra right through to camera settings and internal colour correction before it is even sent out as a video signal. Then thanks to NVidia's new Video Capture and Output technology the signal is sent directly through to the GPU's for up to 6 layers of realtime processing. From there you can either send back out to video or save it to disk to either continue your session as DI or turn the whole system into a virtual vtr to be controlled by your avid or final cut.

The system performs automatic scene detection and setup is a real simple process.

You decide which way you work. Linear or Non-Linear from RED, DPX, Film, Video or all at once. then send it out whichever way you want.

Keep up the great work Dan, we can't wait to see how far you can push this realtime GPU Technology.

The Sondor Altra is an SD, HD or 2K Realtime Film telecine in either 16 or 35 mm, it has 3 rs422 interfaces to control transport, camera and colour correction all being controlled from the Ocean software.

MATROX

Finally I went and checked out the new Matrox MXO2 Mini to see how it performed as a preview device for the Avid Media Composer.  Its looking great. Nice cheap monitoring solution for Avid Media Composer Software only systems all over. Shipping date looks like mid June. (Requires Media Composer v5)

I'll see how far my sore feet will take me through the show tomorrow. See you then.

Harry Magiros.
