NAB 2010 - Day 3

NAB 2010 - Day 3

2010-04-14

Avid Technology

So after the Avid Announcements the other day I thought I would go along and see how this changed things.

So just like every other booth on the floor this year the focus is on Stereoscopic 3D vision.

Media Composer can now play red files and DS has 3D output capability.

http://www.h-digital.com.au/images/news/nab2010/DAY3/Euphonics1.jpg

I like the little euphonics media controller, it has a nice transport mechanism and my favorite feature is the media lcd screen which reads the menu structure of whatever application you are in and displays ll the menu options as buttons on the touchscreen lcd.

And on a mac you can jump straight out of media composer and into Apple COlor to do some grading with the euphonics dials and sliders.

Bluefish 444

http://www.h-digital.com.au/images/news/nab2010/DAY3/BluefishEpoch.jpg

Bluefish are now shipping their latsest 3G HD VIdeo I/O Card. Dan from Marquise is using this for realtime Video I/O with a tight integration with the NVidia graphics card allowing fro realtime 6 layers of colour grading in GPU on the live video stream then send the result directly out the video output.

Hamlet

http://www.h-digital.com.au/images/news/nab2010/DAY3/Hamlet3D.jpg

More 3D Production tools. Hamlet now have a 3D scope allowing you to calibrate and monitor both channels simultaneously. A Must for serious grading work.

GenArts

http://www.h-digital.com.au/images/news/nab2010/DAY3/GenArts.jpg

Steve from Genarts is looking very happy after joining Genarts along with the Tinder plugins from Foundry. All plugins now come from Genarts..... I wonder if they will do a Super Monster Box....?

25% off during the show if you get in quick there is still tomorrow morning.

iSilon

http://www.h-digital.com.au/images/news/nab2010/DAY3/iSilon.jpg

Now if you big-end Multistream shared video, iSilon is the place to go. They were very proudly showcasing the great work they did for Canadian broadcasters during the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

Genelec

http://www.h-digital.com.au/images/news/nab2010/DAY3/Genelec.jpg

Now for all you production people out there that are spending big bucks on your edit suites and ignoring your ears.. stop it.. I love Genelec's... Yes they are expensive, but your ears deserve them. For crystal clear studio sound and gut wrenching deep bass.. You HAVE to get some..... I Especially like the 10" sub-woofers.

TVLogic

http://www.h-digital.com.au/images/news/nab2010/DAY3/TVLogic4K.jpg

Now everyone at the show is raving raving about red... If you want to do it properly, then get a redrocket and plug the output into one of these 4K monitors... The picture is stunning. However there is something better coming....

http://www.h-digital.com.au/images/news/nab2010/DAY3/TVLogicOLED.jpg

This is a prototype of a 17" OLED screen from TVLogic. it will be about $8500... but when they manage to work out how to make these guys in 50" + we will all go up to colour heaven... Perfection is being mild. It works by emitting light unlike an lcd that uses the lcd to block the light (Thats why you can't get black on an lcd) and it is incredibly thin.... People were seriously trying to walk away with it....

Boxx Technologies

More from boxx.

http://www.h-digital.com.au/images/news/nab2010/DAY3/GoBoxx.jpg

Here we have the latest goboxx with a desktop motherboard hosting nvidia 2800 graphics and a full size 3.33ghz i7 intel chip.... Take your office on the road.

and why not take your servers with you to.

http://www.h-digital.com.au/images/news/nab2010/DAY3/BoxxonWheels.jpg

Renderboxx to go...

Here is 120cores of render power with 48TB of hard drives attached. You can add a second row of 120 cores then in one small rollaway roadcase you have a 240 core 48TB portable monster. (Call me for pricing...)

JVC

http://www.h-digital.com.au/images/news/nab2010/DAY3/JVC3DProductionMonitor.jpg

JVC has a nice impressive range of 3D Production Monitors. Picture is very crisp and the 3d glasses are ok when you get used to them. Just don't get your picture taken with them on...

SONY
http://www.h-digital.com.au/images/news/nab2010/DAY3/SonyBooth.jpg

Sony has a good range of 3D production monitors now, ranging from 24" up to over 50"

http://www.h-digital.com.au/images/news/nab2010/DAY3/Sony3DProductionMonitors.jpg

My favourite sony monitor however is this little $15,000 USD 7" OLED

http://www.h-digital.com.au/images/news/nab2010/DAY3/SonyOLEDmonitor.jpg

Now this is really hard to see from my iphone photo but you just have to be there to see it...

LEFT: CRT, MIDDLE: OLED, RIGHT: LCD

Clear winner is the OLED

Videobank

My last stop of the trip was to see my old friend Lous from Videobank.

http://www.h-digital.com.au/images/news/nab2010/DAY3/LousVideobank.jpg

He has been incredibly busy helping the US military install lots of Videobank systems to help them fight wars in the deserts. (I think I'm glad I'm not on that project's support team) But they have been doing incredibly well both with both government installations and commercial sites such as National Geographic Nascar and Corbus Motion.

Well That's it for this year from me, I'm off to the shadow bar for a rest...
